By no fault of our own, many of us just aren’t happy with our smile. Despite all the efforts that can go into dental hygiene, it isn’t always enough to end up with the a perfectly straight, beautiful smile. Braces are the traditional solution, but many teens and adults would prefer to not have the conspicuous appearance of metallic braces, nor want to deal with long time and effort it takes to complete the treatment.

At Chappaqua Dentistry, we are a provider of Invisalign braces for all of our patients in Westchester. Not only are they much less noticeable, but they can also straighten teeth faster than traditional braces!

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is what is known as a clear aligner. It is custom-made to fit the shape of your teeth and is worn much like a dental retainer, fitting over your teeth to gradually move and properly align them to the smile that you have always desired. To ensure the best readjustment, Invisalign braces are switched out every two weeks. Each new Invisalign liner you recieve is adjusted to further correct your smile.

Every Invisalign device is made using a mold or impression that is taken from a patient’s teeth by one of our dentists. With revolutionary computer modeling, the custom device is fashioned to fit uniquely to your mouth for a degree of gradual improvement until your smile is completely straightened.

The Benefits of Invisalign

One of the major benefits of Invisalign is that treatment will be completed quicker than traditional, metal braces. Some patients can complete their treatment in only six months! During the treatment time patients also find their aligners much more comfortable and appealing to wear. This is from the fact they are custom molded to fit their mouth alone and also due to the fact that the aligners are clear. Most people you interact with day in and day out won’t be able to notice you are straightening your teeth

Invisalign is also much more convenient than metallic braces. There are no irritating metal wires and components that can feel irritating. They can also be removed easily and placed back in, so you can eat, drink, brush and floss your teeth like normal. Since you will be coming in every two weeks for the next Invisalign aligner, you will be able to track the process over time, and see how effective it is, too.

What To Expect From Invisalign Aligners

When you first meet with your dentist about the Invisalign treatment, we will first have a consultation to ensure that you’re a good candidate for Invisalign. Here are what is typical of most patient’s experience:

  • A treatment plan is created. Molds/impressions, photographs, and digital x-rays of your teeth will be made. We will discuss what Invisalign can do for you, including what your teeth will look at throughout the treatment. We will then be able to determine the projected amount of time for your treatment, as well. Most patients treatment plan will be from 6-12 months.
  • Once we have outlined the plan we’ll schedule an appointment for when your first aligner is ready. Your dentist will place the aligners over your teeth at first to ensure that they are the correct fit. Special, invisible fasteners will be bonded temporarily to your teeth, over which the aligners are worn.
  • With the exception of meals and brushing, it’s best to keep your Invisalign aligners in day and night for 20-22 hours a day. It may take some time to get used to them and they might feel slightly strange for the first few days. From there every two weeks, you will be getting a new pair of aligners that you can switch in by yourself, but if you prefer to have the dentist present, this can be arranged. Otherwise, you will be asked to come in for an appointment every six weeks to ensure everything is going as expected and have minor modifications made if needed.
  • Once your treatment is complete, you may be asked to wear a retainer for a time to ensure that your teeth hold their desired position and aren’t shifted by age-related changes. Eventually, you may only have to wear a retainer for a few nights a week.

Naturally, the results from your Invisalign treatment and how long they last depends on your own oral care, as well. A thorough routine of brushing and flossing, regular checkups, dental cleanings, and ensuring you protect your teeth, such as wearing a custom mouthguard when playing sports, can ensure the healthiest, more attractive smile possible.

Am I A Good Candidate For Invisalign?

Invisalign can correct a wide range of orthodontic issues, such as gapped teeth, crowded teeth, mild overbite, mild underbite, and mild crossbite. However, there are some other issues that it may not be able to correct, such as severe malocclusions or a severe bite alignment issue. To make sure that your teeth can be corrected with the help of Invisalign, it’s important to arrange a consultation with us so that our team of dentists can help you better understand what kind of results to expect.

Invisalign is a great choice for patients who don’t want the hassle or the visibility of traditional, metallic braces. Invisalign is typically recommended for those whose teeth are done growing, such as older teenagers and adults.

You must also be willing to wear your Invisalign braces for around 22 hours a day, removing them only for eating, brushing, and flossing. If you are unable to follow the proper schedule, the treatment will not be as effective.
