The Difference Between Drugstore & Professional Teeth Whitening Treatments

Many patients will try a drugstore teeth whitening treatment and not have the results they are hoping for. When you come to our Westchester dental practice for a teeth whitening treatment you’ll find that you’ll have whiter and, long-lasting results! Here are a few differences between these two teeth whitening treatments:

Over The Counter Method:

  • Typically, less effective than professional bleaching to treat deep staining.
  • Require more time and treatments before any noticeable change.
  • Appears less expensive but can become more expensive than professional whitening treatments.
  • Require a number of doses over a time.
  • Over-bleaching, which is more possible with an over the counter method, can cause enamel erosion and increased gum sensitivity.

Professional Teeth Whitening:

  • Creates faster, longer-lasting results.
  • Safer way to bleach teeth because it is being applied by a Westchester cosmetic dentist.
  • Can be more comfortable than take-home treatments.
  • Easiest way to measure a change and ensure a difference.
  • A higher concentration of the bleaching agent in one treatment for better results.

What Is A Professional Teeth Whitening Treatment Like?

Before we begin the whitening process we’ll first need to prepare your teeth. We’ll thoroughly clean your teeth and remove any visible plaque. We’ll also analyze the health and the condition of your mouth to check for any potential issues, like gum disease or severe tooth decay.

Once your teeth are ready, we’ll proceed with the following steps:

  1. We’ll place a cheek retractor in your mouth. This will make it easier to apply the gel to your teeth.
  2. A protective coating will be applied to your gums to protect them from the bleaching gel.
  3. We’ll apply the bleaching gel which will remain on the teeth for 15 to 30 minutes.
  4. When the first application of gel is complete, we’ll wash it off. Then we’ll check to see how many shades of white your teeth have become.
  5. A second application of bleaching gel will then be applied if needed to whiten your smile even more. This will again remain on your teeth for another period of 15 to 30 minutes.
  6. Depending on the circumstances, we may use a UV light to enhance the effects of the whitening.
  7. Once the treatment is complete, we’ll remove the cheek retractors. You’ll then rinse your mouth, and we’ll measure the results.

Out of the total of 16 shades of teeth, your teeth can whiten between two and eight shades after an in-office whitening treatment. However, if you haven’t obtained a satisfactory level of whitening we’ll work with you to get the results you hope for. This can likely be reached with take-home bleaching trays or another teeth whitening appointment.

Generally these steps are completely comfortably with minor discomfort. Please do let us know if there is anything more we can do to make sure that your experience is pleasant and comfortable!

Maintaining White Teeth

There are a few things you can do to help your whitened teeth last. The first thing you’ll want to do is practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing your teeth regularly. This will prevent complications from arising and preserve your whitened teeth for as long as possible by keeping plaque and bacteria under control.

Another thing you can do is avoid food and drinks that can stain your teeth. These substances have a strong color that can permanently rub off on your teeth. This staining is especially potent on a freshly-whitened smile. These substances include: Coffee, dark-colored soda, dark-colored tea, red wine, and dark fruit juices.

Regular checkups at our office will also help you maintain your brightened smile. When you come we’ll be able to professionally clean your teeth and ensure that all is going well.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

Just like you skin, your teeth have pores. Over time, your teeth absorb the colors of the foods that you eat. If you examine your day-to-day diet, you’ll notice a correlation between a white smile and healthy foods, and a less with smile with dark-colored or unhealthy foods. This explains why whatever kind of teeth-whitening you get, the color will not last forever. The whitening peroxide will dye the teeth white, but as they are exposed to foods, over the course of months they’ll start to fade once more.

Afraid of this inevitable occurrence, some patients who whiten their teeth at home can overdo it. If not done correctly, exposing the mouth to strong chemicals can damage your teeth and gums. That’s another reason we highly recommend that you come schedule an appointment with one of our cosmetic dentists to brighten your smile. We know how to do it with safely and effectively.
